How Does Tattoo Numbing Gel Work?
Our HUSH Numbing Gel is a local anesthetic, meaning it topically numbs the skin. It contains lidocaine as a main active ingredient.
Lidocaine numbs the skin by blocking the nerves in the skin from sending pain signals to the brain. This is only a temporary effect of the gel, but it’s perfect for anyone wanting to forgo the irritating pain of getting a tattoo.
The lidocaine-based numbing gel is applied directly to the skin you plan to tattoo. You’ll know it’s working when your skin in the area is numb to the touch. Poke away!
Tips for Applying Tattoo Numbing Gel
It is best to apply the numbing gel shortly before your tattoo appointment. Most people notice the numbing working within 30 to 60 minutes after applying the gel.
Use gloves to avoid numbing your hands or any skin you don’t want to be numbed. Numb hands are no fun!
Evenly spread the gel directly to the skin being tattooed. The amount you use depends on the size of the tattoo. Applying more will not make it work quicker, so just apply an even layer.
Cover the area with plastic and do not touch it! Be sure to wash your hands well after applying the numbing gel. Make sure to note the time you applied the gel so you’ll know when it’s time to get going.

When To Apply Tattoo Numbing Gel
A numbing gel works best when applied before your tattoo appointment. For most people, lidocaine begins to work about 30 to 60 minutes after it is put on the skin.
If you have any concerns, talk to your tattoo artist beforehand to see when they recommend applying the numbing gel. Don’t be shy about communicating with your artist about numbing products — many artists use them for their own tattoos!
Hush Tattoo Numbing Gel vs. Spray: What to Use & When
When it comes to deciding between a numbing gel or spray, how do you choose? Our Numbing Gel and Healing Spray are lidocaine-based and contain similar healing botanicals.
The numbing gel is better suited for use before your tattoo appointment. It numbs the area of the skin you’re planning to tattoo.
We recommend using the spray during the healing process after getting the tattoo. It is especially useful when used in tandem with the other products in our HUSH Aftercare Set.
