When is the Best Time to Get a Tattoo?

Wondering when is the best time to get a tattoo? Does it actually matter when you get a tattoo? Believe it or not, the answer is yes! There IS a time of year when getting a tattoo can be a more pleasant experience: winter. Surprised? Sure, it might sound a little strange at first but here are the reasons we say winter (and we’d consider fall season a top contender as well) is the best time to get a tattoo.

Easy to cover-up

Despite the incredible tattoo pictures you see online and on social media, no one walks out of a tattoo shop with a perfect-looking tattoo. Your tattoo is going to have some degree of redness and swelling, it will scab and peel, and overall just won’t be something you’re proud to show off at first. Because of this, when the weather is cooler, it is a great time to get a tattoo because we’re all more covered up in fall and winter anyway.

Less sun exposure

When you get a tattoo, you’ll find that one of the important pieces of aftercare instructions is “keep a healing tattoo out of the sun”. This is much easier to do in the winter. It can be a drag to get an arm tattoo in the summer and have to walk around with a big covering to protect it from the sun, while you’re wearing shorts and a t-shirt or tank. In the colder weather, most tattoo locations will be covered naturally. Even if you spend plenty of time outside, you’ll have less sun exposure than you will in the summer months.

Time to heal

When you get a tattoo in the late fall or winter, it can be a little easier to wait out the tedious healing process. You’ll know that by summer (and even spring), your tattoo will be fully healed and ready to display as the nicer weather arrives. You’ll also be less sweaty in most cases, which can make the healing process more comfortable.

Avoid the crowds

We like winter as the best time to get a tattoo because it’s not the popular time to get one. This means you’ll likely have an easier time getting an appointment with the tattoo artist of your choice. You also may feel less rushed, or calmer with fewer people coming in and out of the studio during your session.

In addition to knowing when is the best time to get a tattoo, there are some major checkboxes on when is the WORST time to get a tattoo. Here are our top contenders:

  • Do NOT get a tattoo when you just got broken up with, or just dumped someone
  • Do NOT get a tattoo when you’re drunk
  • Do NOT get a tattoo when you lost a bet or lost a fantasy football season
  • Do NOT get a tattoo when someone dared you to
  • Do NOT get a tattoo when you’re legally too young to get one
  • Do NOT get a tattoo when you haven’t taken the time to research your tattoo artist
